The adult trainee route

How do I become an electrician?

Whether it's retraining, gaining qualifications or simply a late starter, the route to being an electrician can be quite daunting if you don't know where or who to turn to. Luckily, there are ways and means for adults (which is now classed as aged 19+) to get fully qualified and sometimes there is even funding available.

Adult trainees often turn out to be an excellent return on the investment outlay due to a more focused approach than an apprentice. The more mature the trainee, the more willing they tend to be to pick up and learn the ins and outs of being an electrician.

Don't be afraid of approaching companies, even if you consider yourself a mature candidate, a lot of electricians and electrical employers will recognise qualities and the potential in you and with the right impression, enthusiasm and motivation, those qualities may give you a foothold in the industry. Many students with the enthusiasm and application go on to become fully qualified electricians and many more start up their own business.
