C&G 2357 609 Electrical Science and Maths

Introduction

The final GOLA exam that appears in the 2357 qualification is the 609 which introduces electrical science into the qualification. This is an exam that covers a huge range of different areas and is a difficult exam to pass.

Exam Breakdown

The exam is a 30 question multiple choice online exam broken down into several different sections with a 60 minute time limit.

Category Number of Questions
Mathematical principles 2
Standard units of measurement 6
Mechanics and the relationship between force, work, energy and power 7
Resistance, resistivity, voltage, current and power 15

Revision List

The following items should form the mainstay of your revision time:

  • Mathematical principles
  • SI Units
  • Mass and weight
  • Measuring and test instruments
  • Basic mechanics
  • Force, work, power, energy, efficiency
  • Electrical energy and power
  • Electron theory
  • Conductors and insulators
  • Electrical cable construction and properties
  • Current, voltage and resistance in series and parallel circuits
  • Power
  • Electromagnetism
  • Magnetism and electricity
  • Sine waves
  • Generation of electricity
  • Supply voltages
  • Transformers
  • Sources of electrical energy
  • Effects of inductance and capacitance on an electrical circuit
  • True power, apparent power and power factor
  • Power factor correction
  • Three phase supplies
  • Balanced and unbalanced loads
  • Single and three phase motors
  • d.c. motors
  • a.c. motors
  • Motor starting and control
  • Electrical components
  • Circuit protection
  • RCDs
  • Applications and principles of lighting
  • Principles of electrical heating
  • Electronic components
  • Semi-conductor devices

Note: The above list is not exhaustive, we recommend working through the syllabus on the C&G website to ensure you cover all the areas.  The 609 has a massive amount of detail to it and is not a unit to take lightly with over 100 guided learning hours allocated to it. There are different approaches to the delivery of the unit, some centres will complete it as a unitised element, covering all the science in one go while others will look to spread the unit over the apprenticeship choosing to cover it in parts as they work through.

Note: The City and Guilds exam only covers a small section of the delivered unit, the revision list above is much larger to reflect the same unit by EAL which is covered by a much fuller exam.
