Introduction

The C&G2330 Level 2 and Level 3 Certificate in Electrotechnology was introduced as a replacement qualification for the outgoing C&G2351 technical certificate (which in turn replaced the C&G2360). It was launched after complaints about the quality of the previous qualification were raised by employers. The initial launch was quite rocky and it took some time to embed the exam and get things tweaked to suit the purpose.  Many institutions felt unsupported by the C&G regarding the quality of the formal documentation and worked with the C&G to address these concerns. What is left is a solid qualification with a good mix of practical, installation theory and electrical science.

The end of the qualification?

Initially scheduled to be replaced in its entirety by the C&G2357, the qualification had an eleventh hour reprieve after much lobbying of the various powers to be by many within education who view the qualification as the only real way some students can enter the electrical industry.  Summit Skills decided that only those working within the industry could now get qualified, effectively closing the door to any progression routes and retraining by mature candidates. After a letter from the education secretary himself, the qualification has now been extended until the 31st July 2012. After that, we do not know of its future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be employed to do this qualification?

No, although you will need employment or significant work experience to complete the NVQ and get your JIB ECS Gold Card. These will be completed on site mainly through observation by an assessor. You are free to just study the C&G2330 as a standalone qualification.

If I do the C&G2330, can I work as an electrician?

There are no legal requirements regarding qualifications to working as an electrician although there is the issue of judging compentency (Electricity at Work Regulations 1989) and more and more sites are asking for the ECS safety card to gain entry.  You cannot get the ECS Gold card unless you also have the C&G2356 (including the AM2), although you can get a different card if needed. The difference between someone holding the NVQ and someone not is a decision for the employer who needs to make a full judgment on competency in compliance with the EAWR 1989.

If I do the C&G2330, can I get my ECS Gold Card?

It forms part of your application, you will also need the C&G2356 NVQ Level 3 and the AM2 to get your full Gold Card. Without it, you can only get the improvers card.

When is the 2330 closing?

At the moment, it is looking like 31/07/12 will be the final date.  It is not really thought that it will extend past this date at this moment in time although things change very quickly.

1. For the purpose of this site, a fully qualified electrician is considered to hold the ECS Gold card issued by the JIB. We understand there is no legal definition of qualified as of yet, but ascribe to the notion that an electrician holding the Gold card has sufficient competence and qualifications to be classed as an electrician.
2. Please contact the JIB direct about a grading card.  They may ask for or require proof of training.
