The City & Guilds 2330 forms the underpinning knowledge requirements for the NVQ as well as being respected qualifications in their own right. A good provider balances theory to practical activities at around 50% and should give you a good footing in your quest to practise as an electrician.
* This is for the Installation (Buildings and Structures) route, there are other available routes such as electrical maintenance and street lighting, visit the City and Guilds website for more information.

C&G 2382 17th Edition Wiring Regulations - Requirements for Electrical Installations
Originally desgined to bring electricians up to date with the latest changes contained within the IEE Regulations and the necessary amendments. Today the qualification is seemingly open to all regardless of experience or background as there is no stipulation by the City and Guilds about the entrance requirements. The course is a multi choice course and is open book, meaning you can take the BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations book into the exam. The pass rate is high, there are few failures on this course due to the open book nature of the exam and the wide variety of information sources available. Generally speaking, if you are able to use an index and display a modicum of electrical installation knowledge, you should be a guaranteed pass.
Full course 2382-10
This option is open to anyone to attend. If you completed your 16th Edition before 2001 or if you do not have a Regulations qualification, then you must do this course. Most, if not all electrical employers, designers and contractors should be aware of the requirements of BS7671, one way of satisfying this is to complete the 17th Edition course.
Update course 2383-20
If you completed your 16th Edition qualification after 2001 or you have a recent technical certificate at Level 3 (such as the 2360 or the 2330) after 2004, then you can complete just the update course.

The 2391/Level 3 Certificate in Inspection and Testing
This is the exam that everyone seems to dread. With a pass rate approximately at 45%, that's probably the reason why.
The examination is closed book, written, and in two parts. There are also 4 practical assessments. To complete the certificate, you need the following:
- 2391-101 Inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations (written)
- 2391-102 Practical application of the inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations (practical)
The written paper is in 2 parts, short answer and long answer and the practical assessment is in four parts, a visual inspection, measurement of Zs (including non IEE Wiring Regulations conformity), insulation resistance with built in faults and a simulated periodic inspection. It is held in reasonably high esteem within the industry because of the difficulty of the written element of the exam and the low pass rate. To pass the written exam does require quite detailed knowledge of the whole inspection and testing process and an excellent understanding of Guidance Note 3 published by the IEE.
There is a new course soon to be offered by the City and Guilds aimed at those who are not comfortable passing a Level 3 Inspection and Test course. This will be offered by City and Guilds at Level 2 and will be a multiple choice exam rather than a written one like its level 3 counterpart. The courses are numbered:
2392-10 - Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification
This course is an introduction to testing and inspection and is designed to give the operative an introduction to inspection and testing before they start the 2391. As the pass rate is so low on the 2391, this may be a useful qualification.
The qualifcation is set at level 2 yet follows many of the same principles that makes up the 2391. Indeed, the syllabus to the 2392 is very similar indeed to that of the 2391, perhaps the biggest difference is that it is limited to single phase testing. Many incorrectly call this a domestic inspection and test course, which is incorrect.
The course is assessed via practical tasks and a 50 question multiple choice test taken online through the GOLA exam interface.
