domestic electrical installer
This qualification is offered as a VRQ (Vocationally Related Qualification) by EAL and is aimed at those who are in some way allied to the trade such as:
- Plumbers
- Gas fitters
- Kitchen fitters
- Fire and security engineers
It enables these individuals to join a competent person scheme so they can carry out basic domestic electrical work as they would as part of their daily role.
There is some controversy over this qualification as it is being used as a quick entry into the world of electrical installation by people with no electrical or trade background. EAL state that the course should be completed within 51 hours, which is approximately 17 weeks at evening classes or 2 weeks at full time study. The EAL state that 51 hours is purely a guideline and is targeted at electricians and those with experience in the industry. More time should be allotted if the person is inexperienced and doesn't have an electrical background at the discretion of the provider delivering the course. The general consensus is that it is an excellent qualification if delivered correctly and to the correct person.
There is another alternative to this qualification offered by the NICEIC known as the DISQ, the Domestic Installer Scheme Qualification.
The City and Guilds have also launched qualifications around the Building Regulations known as the 2393.
