nvq

NVQ's were introduced by the Government to assess occupational competence in the workplace. The NVQ, or National Vocational Qualification to give it its full title, is completed while you are at work, usually via a diary or log book and supported by evidence. Evidence is often in the form of photos, risk assessments, job sheets, test result sheets and any other relevant documents. The portfolio, as it is commonly known, is then assessed by a qualified assessor from a college or training provider. Site visits will also take place during your training, in most cases 3 visits over the course of your apprenticeship is adequate to cover the relevant units.

The current NVQ is only offered at Level 3 after industry leaders decided that there was no place for a lower qualification. It is offered by the City and Guilds and EAL and can usually be sourced from a local college or training provider. The NVQ is not cheap to gain but is considered the best route to becoming an electrician.

The current NVQ requires you to cover the following units*:

  • Ensure safe site working
  • Diagnose and correct electrical faults
  • Provide technical and functional information
  • Maintain a safe and healthy working environment
  • Prepare to install wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment
  • Install wiring systems, wiring enclosures and equipment
  • Connect wiring systems and equipment using safe and approved methods
  • Inspect, test and commission an electrical installation

To complete the NVQ, a pratical performance assessment such as the AM2 must also be completed. There may be exemptions to this if you are a practising operative (an adult currently working within the industry).

Changes

The current NVQ is being phased out and replaced in 2008 with an updated version hoping to standardise assessment criteria and jargon across different trades. More information as and when it becomes available.

*This is for the installation (Buildings and Structures) route only. Other routes are possible, please visit the City and Guilds for more information.
