Hi guys,

Just joined this forum looking for some information on qualifications required to be a maintenance technician (or something along those lines)

The story so far..

Went to uni for 3 years obtaining a Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical and electronic engineering.

I am currently working (and have been for the past 3 yrs) in the building services trade as an electrical engineer. Design of electrical services within new builds / refurbs / extensions etc...

What i was thinking was to go back to college for a couple of short term C&G courses (namely 2382 & 2391...17th Wiring Regs / Inspection & Testing) hoping to become a electrical maintenance technician.

I am looking at potential electrical maintenance jobs and whether this is worth my time (and money) to do. Do you need to be a time served electrician to become a maintenance technician? If so, do i need to start an apprenticeship to obtain a NVQ L3? (i'm now 25!)

Do the C & G courses enough to walk into a maintenance job?

Thanks in advance

Usually with your background all I would expect is a current Regs qualification and perhaps an inspection and test one too. Your degree and experience should cover the rest of the requirements.

To complete your NVQ, you don't have to be an apprentice but you do have to be working in the trade itself.

Maintenance has a lot of similarities to installation work, but depending on the actual job, requires strengths in different disciplines, I am sure going for a job you could weigh in on the strengths you will have gained from your degree.
